#gamerlate or how to relax in the middle of bar prep

i honestly can't tell if this guy believes his own hype, or if he's just playing straw-man to gain clicks. i sincerely hope it's the latter. i won't take the time to point out all the logical fallacies in this guy's argument, i mean just listen to him. how many times does he call for proof as if there is a truth in either of the two opinions that can be made more or less likely through the use of empirical evidence. (this so obviously would fall more in line with an expert opinion standard of impeachment than a preponderance or reasonable doubt burden of proof standard... did i mention i've been in bar prep mode?) i won't even comment on his tone, except to say,"let that hurt go, dawg". what i want to focus on is this: war? really? who said #gamergate was a war? isn't #gamergate a grassroots movement that started on ideals of fairness in media coverage that grew like a cancer into a derisive, community dividing hate filled behemoth?why are we throwing grenades at other gamers for expressing their desire for fair representation within the medium? other gamers aren't the enemy. anita sarkeesian and zoe quinn aren't the enemy. jack thompson and joe lieberman were the enemy and we obliterated them. 

i also want to comment on this guy's rhetoric, namely his use of language like, "a woman who was wrong" and, "this is just the way the world (of gaming) is" (i'm paraphrasing, so sue me). you know what you sound like? a southerner circa 1962. it's one thing to criticize the sarkeesian's for the.. schematics. lord knows that lady lays it on thick. but wrong? what is the last game you played with a female lead that wasn't some doodz sexual fantasy? when is the last time a game dev decided to bank their next big franchise on a black or hispanic or samoan (you get the picture) lead character? when's the last time a group consisting of mainly...male members of the majority  -- since that's just the way the market is right? -- acquiesced peacefully to another demographic joining the ranks? face it: whether you appreciate the argument or not, the sarkeesian's have a point.

look, i get it. change is scary. games were always the bastion of the socially awkward white kid, his goofy fat sidekick, if you believe hollywood. then playstation happened, and all the cool kids had one, too. then Miyamoto came to our doorstep, asked if Wii would like to play, and the whole world said a collective, "yup" and that cozy little safe zone for nerds and misfits became the default setting for... everyone.

and it's scary, i know, but these new voices aren't your enemy. they aren't even new. they were always there -- little girls rescued as many princess on the NES and SNES as you. the jocks and the bullies logged as many hours in punchout and tecmo bowl as the nerds they gave swirlies, or  however the 80s dictates their interaction went. just now we all have a voice, and yeah, maybe it would be cool for a franchise to launch with a hero who didn't just look like a re-skinned nathan drake. 

hashtaggamergate isn't a war. it's an internal monologue between the greater consciousness of the gamer collective, and the subconscious it didn't know was there and doesn't want to listen to. this isn't a job for Doom Guy: it's a job or Raz so drop the BFG, Doom Guy. stand down, soldier. the war is over. go home.

sometimes i look at the 4 or 5 prematurely grey hairs i've gotten over the last three years and i wonder what the point of it all is. so i ask you guys, was all the stress and the sleepless nights and the weight gain really worth it? what do you guys think?

A cold day in November

so i've spent a good portion of the past week talking to voters and candidates, and i've learned something important. what i've learned is that regardless of what most people's beliefs, politics, pet issues and party affiliation, most people are decent, upstanding citizens. for the most part my interactions with the voting public and the candidates for office has been pleasant or at least reasonably non-vitriolic.

see, the thing about the word "most" is that it demands a "some". and the some were the blithering idiots that believe whatever Bill O'Reilly tells 'em to believe. or worse, the ones that take Pat Robertson seriously. a guy who said this about haiti after the earthquake hit and all this shit.

pat robertson, seriously....

now, this is america, and people in america have the right to belive whatever stupid thing they want, because 'murica. but when people don't know facts, when they vote some unimportant pet issue over their needs, an they do so based on the tripe they hear from false prophets and agenda spouting talking heads, i gotta draw the line. see, the drewniverse isn't just about enriching people's lives, it's about fighting ignorance for the good of the drewninites!
